Great New Artists: Katarina Sokolova
Welcome to the new blog! When I started this series in my other blog I was surprised at how many visitors enjoyed it. So I decided to take it to the next level and give this topic a whole blog unto itself!
A Little Background on Me
If you have visited my site you know I am an artist. I have been around art my whole life, my mother was a painter and my father was a musician so there has never been a time when I was not studying or generally exposed to art. I have since gone on to study Visual Communications in college and will graduate with that degree this year (2008). I discovered writing when I was 10 and now want to combine art and writing in the interest of exploration of new art communities that are happening online particularly in new mediums like digital painting which is the medium I have begun to work in.
With that in mind here is the first article in the series:
In my recent web-related travels I find myself coming across some pretty great new artists so I’ve decided to start a series in which I will introduce some of my favorites there’s no particular schedule for this just whenever I find someone whose work I particularly love/like/enjoy.
In this case it is an artist whose work made me cry. Katarina Sokolova is a Ukrainian born artist who began her training at the age of 6 and now works in a variety of media including photography and computer graphics which is showcased on her website. Her main subjects are beautiful women and her main tool for computer illustration is Corel Painter which is a program I have little knowledge of but after seeing her work intend to delve a little deeper into.
Her work showcases a variety of ethnicities and color palettes but she admits in this interview that her recent trip to Japan is a big influence on her most recent pieces. All of her paintings have elements of fantasy but the characters are grounded in reality which is evident in the emotion she is able to portray sometimes with no more than the right choice of color.
Her photography far surpasses my former favorites. Her glamour photography is tasteful and highly stylized as only a woman could pull off and her genre photography is near perfect in its composition displaying that she has a great eye for subject matter. The little post production touches she brings to her portraits blend perfectly; so much so that I don’t even notice them until the second time around.
I would highly recommend studying her work for composition techniques.
